The father of Nigerian footballer, Mikel Obi has been rescued from kidnappers.

Police in Nigeria’s Enugu State say Pa Michael Obi was rescued from kidnappers after he was abducted on June 29.

The Punch Newspaper reports that Pa Obi and his driver, John Ishaya, were abducted on the Makurdi-Enugu Road.

Police spokesperson Ebere Amaraizu said this in a statement that the kidnappers demanded $28,000 (N10m) as ransom from Obi’s family.

Place of rescue

The Police said Pa Obi and his driver were rescued in a forest in Enugu after a gun battle between the police and the kidnappers.

The kidnappers are said to have escaped during the gun battle.

“They were rescued hale and hearty and pa Michael Obi and the driver have been reunited with their families,” Amaraizu said.

It is is the second time Mikel Obi’s father, Pa Obi is being kidnapped. He was first kidnapped in August 2011.

The Nigerian captain thanked the police for rescuing his father in a message on Twitter.
