Zimbabwe’s parliament has “recused” the country’s former President, Robert Mugabe from its ongoing probe into missing state funds.
The 94-year-old former leader was to be questioned by lawmakers over his 2016 claim that the country lost $15 billion in income from diamonds.
Mugabe alleged that the loot was due to corruption and foreign exploitation. But his own government was accused of siphoning off diamond profits.
Attempts to question Mugabe
The Parliament of Zimbabwe tried on several occasions to questioned the former President but that session could not take place.
Local media now reports that “Former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe will not appear before a Mines and Energy Parliamentary Committee”.
The committee is investigating the said theft and its head, Temba Mliswa said in a statement that “The former President, was unable to attend at the appointed hour
And the committee was due to meet to consider summoning him as a measure of last resort but after consultations with the Honourable Speaker, he was recused from attending.”
Mugabe was succeeded by Emmerson Mnangagwa who has vowed to restore the economic fortunes of the Southern African country.
