A Tanzanian woman was forced by police officers at a station on Saturday to give birth without any medical support.
The 26 year old woman, Amina Raphael Mbunda, was arrested on June 2 when police officers went to her home in search of her husband.
Why the arrest?
Local media reported that Amina’s husband is suspected of buying a stolen bed.
Police arrested the woman who was heavily pregnant at her home in the eastern district of Kilombero in the evening.
Although she asked to be allowed to visit the hospital to deliver, police officers refused her access, according to the Mwananchi daily newspaper.
Amina gave birth on the front lawn of the police station at night, an incident that has attracted anger from Tanzanians.
Condemnation
“How can someone be arrested for a penal infraction committed by someone else? And how come they didn’t realise she was about to give birth? What would have happened if she’d died in that police station?”
Other human rights groups have equally condemned the incident.
