Over 400 public officials are to be questioned by Kenyan investigators over a reported $100 million theft case at the country’s National Youth Service (NYS).
The head of Kenya’s criminal investigations directorate, George Kinoti, said on Sunday that the funds were stolen through fictitious invoices, and multiple payments on one supplier invoice.
The National Youth Service is a state agency that is focused on developing the skills of young people and helping to create jobs for the jobless youth.
This is another major theft case involving the agency following a previous scam case at the same agency back in 2015.
George Kinoti, is quoted by Reuters to have said that the latest incident “is massive theft of public funds,” adding that his department’s aim is “to have anybody who is involved in theft of public funds to answer and if possible to return what they have stolen from the public.”
Senior officials at the Youth Service including its head have all stepped aside last week for investigations to proceed into the scandal.
