Former US president Barack Obama has slammed his successor, Donald Trump who on Tuesday announced that the US has pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal.
President Trump in his speech on Tuesday described the nuclear accord – or Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) as a “horrible, one-sided deal that should have never, ever been made”.
Mr Trump also announced that he would be reimposing economic sanctions waived by the Obama administration in 2015 when the deal was signed.
But in reaction to this announcement, Mr. Obama described Donald Trump’s decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal as “misguided” and a “serious mistake”.
Obama said in a statement that “The reality is clear. The JCPOA is working. That is a view shared by our European allies, independent experts, and the current US secretary of defense.”
“That is why today’s announcement is so misguided,” he added stressing that he believes “that the decision to put the JCPOA at risk without any Iranian violation of the deal is a serious mistake.”
Meanwhile France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian has said that the Iranian nuclear deal is “not dead” although the US has pulled out.
The deal was agreed between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the US, UK, France, China and Russia – plus Germany.
These countries apart from the US have said they are still committed to the deal.
