Gunmen have kidnapped a German nurse who works for the International Committee of the Red Cross in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
Police and ICRC officials confirmed that the kidnapped happened on Wednesday night.
A police officer, Major Mohamed Hussein is quoted by Reuters as saying that “We got the report minutes after she was abducted and now we are searching the whole area. We hope we shall find her.”
In a statement the ICRC said the abduction occurred around 17:00 GMT with the organisation’s deputy head of delegation for Somalia, Daniel O’Malley saying “We are deeply concerned about the safety of our colleague.”
“She is a nurse who was working every day to save lives and improve the health of some of Somalia’s most vulnerable people,” he added.
On Tuesday, some unidentified gunmen shot dead a Somali World Health Organization employee in Mogadishu but no group has yet taken responsibility for the latest kidnapped.
Somalia continues to experience series of attacks carried out by militant group Al-Shabaab with the Mogadishu led government struggling to contain the situation which has created a state of insecurity in the East African country.
