The President of Chad has been given expanded powers after the country’s parliament on Monday approved a new constitution in an overwhelming manner.
The approval of the new constitution was however boycotted by the opposition lawmakers with the new constitution giving President Idriss Deby’s powers which could allow him to stay in office until 2033.
Although the new constitution brings back a two-term limit scrapped in a 2005 referendum it would not be implemented retroactively.
That means President Deby could decide to serve two terms after the next election in 2021.
The constitution would now have to be signed by President Deby to officially become valid.
Deby, who won a disputed fifth term in April 2016, has been the leader of the north-central African nation since December 1990.
