The former president of Malawi, Joyce Banda is to end her self-imposed exile and return home this week.
As the country’s first female president, she fled the country in 2014 at the end of her tenure in the wake of a financial scandal. She has since lived in South Africa, UK and the USA.
The former Malawian president was then accused of abuse of office and money laundering, claims she denied.
Banda’s spokesperson, Nowa Chimpeni told the AFP that the ex-leader will return to “reorganise” her People’s Party, which has been abandoned by many members since her exit from power.
Joyce Banda is hoping to rebuild the party ahead of general elections in 2019 after losing the presidential elections to Peter Mutharika, after serving for two years.
Last year, an arrest warrant was issued for Joyce Banda in relation to the scandal termed as “cashgate”.
More than 70 entrepreneurs, officials and civil servants were charged in connection with the embezzlement of hundreds of millions of dollars from state coffers between 2009 and 2013.
