Police in Nigeria have recovered the official staff of authority of the Senate which was stolen on Wednesday from the Senate chamber of the national assembly.

Some hooligans invaded the legislature in the capital, Abuja, and made away with the official mace which is a ceremonial staff that represents the authority of the law making chamber.

The hoodlums were reported to have invaded the house led by another senator Ovie Omo-Agege who had been suspended for 90 days.

In a statement a spokesperson for the police command, Adeniran Aremu, said the mace was recovered under the flyover before Abuja city gate. The mace was abandoned there by the thugs.

“The police teams engaged in massive raids of identified criminal spots/flashpoints, stop and search operations, visibility and confidence-building patrols, intelligence gathering which forced the suspected miscreants to abandon the Mace at a point under the flyover before the City Gate, where a patriotic passerby saw it and alerted the police,” Aremu said in the statement.
