The President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa has urged Zimbabweans to rejoice about the new dispensation in the southern African country which he called “open” and “liberated”.
Zimbabwe will be marking its independence anniversary on April 18.
It gained independence from British colonial rule in 1980.
President Mnangagwa in a twitter post said “This year’s celebrations carry even greater resonance, as we have entered a new period in our history; a period of freedom, openness and opportunity.”
Mnangagwa is hoping Zimbabweans will “remain united, working together with our brothers and sisters to build a strong and open Zimbabwe for all.”
As we celebrate another blessed Sunday, we look forward to a week during which we will celebrate our country’s independence.

He took over from former mentor and long-time leader, Robert Mugabe after a military takeover forced him to resign last year.
In this new era, we must be liberated not only from without but also from within, from hate, prejudice and discord.

The new Zimbabwean leader had promised to fight corruption and restore freedom of expression within the country as he hopes to fix the country’s economic woes.
Mnangagwa has however this year faced allegations of spending at least $2.3m on his recent trip to China.
He has also called for an end to the sanctions impose on his country which has virtually crippled its economy.
