Fall armyworms have invaded farm lands in Ghana with vast crops reportedly destroyed.
Officials in Ghana say the country’s Ashanti region is the worst hit this time round with farmers now counting their losses.
Starr FM quoted one farmer as saying that “All my maize have been destroyed by these worms. I don’t know how to fight them and I am calling on government to help me save my farm”.
Agriculture officials are reported to be now mobilizing resources to help fight the latest worm invasion.
Ghana in 2016 and 2017 had to battle these armyworms with the government spending a lot of money on protecting farmlands.
The country’s Director of Pest and Diseases Management of Plant Protection and Regulatory Services Directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture, Ebenezer Aboagye has revealed that Ghana is in for a major battle to defeat these worms.
Aboagye said the government is working hard by adopting various natural and unnatural means to deal with the worms.
Fall armyworms can consume large amounts of leaf tissue resulting in a ragged appearance to the leaves similar to what grasshoppers do in damaging crops.
