Officials in South Africa have confirmed the death of six mine workers in a firebomb attack on Monday.
28 others have also been reported to have sustained injuries after the bus they were travelling in was set on fire in Limpopo.
Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo has told the media that “Two people who pretended to be mine workers, got onto the bus and set it alight. They then got out and fled.”
All those killed in the attack according to the police were burnt beyond recognition but driver of the bus and some 28 other workers escaped through windows.
The mine workers were traveling from Modikwa Platinum Mine in Burgersfort, Limpopo. Those injured are receiving medical treatment at the hospital.
Police spokesperson Mojapelo has said that police would reward any person who provides information on those behind the “horrific incident”.
Another senior police officer Commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba also told the media that “We call on community members to assist the police in their quest to swiftly crack this case and any valuable information received will be treated with the strictest confidentiality.”
South Africa’s National Union of Mineworkers in a statement said “we also do not know what is the motive of the attack.”
