Kenya’s Interior Minister Fred Matiang’i and police chief Joseph Boinnet have been fined $2,000 (200,000 Kenyan shillings) by a High Court judge for contempt of court.
The country’s immigration service chief has also been handed same punishment after failing to comply with court order to appear in court.
The Judge George Odunga who ordered the fine said the money is to be deducted from the salaries of the three officials.
These top Kenyan officials were found to have been in contempt for failing to comply with a court order to allow opposition politician Miguna Miguna entry into the country.
Miguna on Wednesday was deported after spending days in detention in a “toilet” facility at the Jomo Kenyatta airport after traveling from the UK to Kenya.
One of Miguna’s lawyer Cliff Ombeta confirmed the deportation of his client to Dubai and was quoted as saying that Dr Miguna “was sedated, handcuffed and taken away”.
In February this year Kenya’s High Court ordered immigration officials to ensure that the opposition politician returns to the country after he was deported to Canada.
A Kenyan court had ruled revoking the deportation of Miguna Miguna who was flown to Canada by the government.
The court’s ruling appears to have indicted the government’s action which was in response to Miguna’s role in administering an oath for opposition leader Raila Odinga who has declared himself as the country’s “president”.
