Ghanaian maritime officials have confirmed that a hijacked Ghanaian fishing vessel has now been rescued and back to Ghana’s ports.
Persons suspected to be pirates were reported to have hijacked the vessel on Monday although officials failed to give details of the said vessel.
An official of the Ghana Maritime Authority, Captain Inusah Abdul-Nasir had told local media Citi FM that ““This incident was reported at about 06:00 pm (GMT) on Monday.”
“We have a system at the Ghana Maritime Authority which we use to track vessels in the Maritime domain so during this monitoring system at about 1800 hours of Monday, there was a call from the vessel,” he added.
Abdul-Nasir gave other details saying “Actually these vessels do not call but they were calling the navy, and there was no response so we intercepted the call and called back, but unfortunately the vessel did not respond. The operator subsequently called to say a fishing vessel was purportedly hijacked.”
But on Wednesday Abdul -Nasir in a response to Africa Feeds said ” the ship is back to Tema Port”, confirming the return of the vessel to Ghana’s waters.
Togolese Navy officials were said to have assisted in the rescue although no details were given whether ransom was paid or how the rescue occurred.
