The ruling party in Zimbabwe Zanu PF has warned that its former leader Robert Mugabe could soon lose his immunity and privileges as a former head of state.
The party could also consider expulsion from the party following his recent remarks about the current president, Emmerson Mnanagagwa.
Robert Mugabe in a recent engagement with the media still considers his exit from power a “coup d’etat” and claimed that his successor “betrayed the whole nation” describing his presidency as “illegal” and “unconstitutional”.
“I say it was a coup d’etat – some people have refused to call it a coup d’etat,” Mugabe said stressing that Zimbabwe “must undo this disgrace which we have imposed on ourselves, we don’t deserve it… Zimbabwe doesn’t deserve it.”
President Mnanagagwa has already said that Zimbabwe has moved on from Robert Mugabe as he sort to ignored the 94 year old’s comments.
Zanu PF’s secretary for legal affairs, Paul Mangwana told the state-run Herald “Zanu-PF will have to meet to discuss these new developments… to review whether it is still necessary or not for him (Mugabe) to continue enjoying the status we had given him.”
Mangwana said a former president had to be a “father figure” and “should not join active politics, particularly opposition politics”.
“If the party is satisfied that he has violated that principle, he will lose his Zanu-PF membership, he will also lose the privileges and immunities accorded to a (former) head of state and forfeit the respect he was enjoying,” Mangwana added.
