Officials in Nigeria have said that over 20 people have died in clashes between herders and farmers in central Nigeria.
The violence broke out on Monday in the village of Omutu, in the Okpokwu area of Benue state over land and grazing rights.
Those killed were mostly women and children in an unrest that is likely to put pressure on Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari.
The clashes have been described as reprisal for the death of a cattle herder and the disappearance of another. Two herders went missing on Monday and one was later found dead, according to state police.
In revenge, a group armed with machetes attacked people, including women and children, in the district of Okpokwu.
“Four suspects have so far been arrested in connection with the gruesome murder,” a police spokesperson is quoted by Reuters as saying.
President Buhari is expected to tour some of the areas hit by such clashes between locals and herdsmen including Benue state.
More than 100 people have been killed this year alone, causing tens of thousands of people to flee their homes.
