The United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres is expected to visit the Democratic Republic of Congo later this year before anticipated and overdue elections.

The UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric on Tuesday said The President of DRC Joseph Kabila has now agreed to a request from UN for such a visit.

Guterres had written to President Kabila to propose a joint visit with African Union chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat following a series of meetings held on the sidelines of the AU summit in Addis Ababa in January.

“I can confirm that a letter was sent and that a message came back that they would be welcome in Kinshasa at their earliest convenience,” the UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told AFP.

No date has been set for the visit but the visit could help restore some confidence in the impending electoral process in a country that is overshadowed by political tension and violence.

There is mounting pressure on the Congolese to resign after he was blamed for his country’s humanitarian and security crisis.

Botswana on Monday blamed Mr. Kabila for the current crisis in the central African country in the sharpest criticism yet from an African government.

Botswana’s Ministry of International Affairs said in a statement that “We continue to witness a worsening humanitarian situation in that country mainly because its leader has persistently delayed the holding of elections, and has lost control over the security of his country.”

Joseph Kabila who has refused to exit power appears to be facing stiffer opposition from the Church since political opposition parties have been rendered ineffective as their leaders have been forced into exile.

Joseph Kabila took over as president from his father Laurent who was assassinated in 2001.
