The President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma has refused to resign as he remains defiant following the decision by the ruling African National Congress (ANC) to recall him.
Zuma told the state broadcaster SABC that “I’ve done nothing wrong” as he questioned why the rush in removing him from power.
Jacob Zuma who has been in power since 2009 said the current move to get rid of him was ” very unfair” saying “No one ever came and said this is what you have done”.
“I’ve not defied. I’ve disagreed with the decision. I think it is baseless” Zuma added in an interview he described as very helpful in getting his message across as he prepares to officially issue a statement in response to ANC leadership recalling him.
The National Assembly of South Africa is preparing to debate a no-confidence motion in President Zuma and the 75 year old leader said he will accept the decision that would be taken by parliament going forward about his future.
The ANC on Tuesday decided to recall President Zuma and sack him as head of state after hours of meetings and negotiations.
Mr. Zuma was not willing to resign as was requested by the leadership of the ANC, hence the decision to remove him from office.
ANC’s Secretary-General Ace Magashule at a news conference on Tuesday said that a delegation had visited Mr Zuma and asked him to step down.
“The president… agreed in principle to resign under a proposed timeframe extending from three to six months,” Mr Magashule said.
“South Africa is going through a period of uncertainty and anxiety,” Mr Magashule added and “The [National Executive Committee] firmly believes the situation requires us to act firmly.”
On Wednesday Police officers in South Africa also raided the home of the powerful Gupta family in a crackdown on the activities of the business friends of President Jacob Zuma.
The raid was part of a probe into allegations the three brothers had corrupt links with Mr. Zuma, who has now been recalled by his ruling party, the ANC as head of state.
