A Nigerian mother of two has been jailed for trafficking her own daughter of 16 years old to work as a commercial sex worker in Lagos state.

Punch in Nigeria reported that the 27 year old woman, Miracle Ita had sent her daughter to a brothel in the Ajah area of the Lagos state for exploitation before her arrest.

The Nigerian National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons which arrested Ita arraigned her in court months ago.

The court found the suspect guilty and sentenced her to two years’ imprisonment with an additional fine of $690 (N250,000).

An official of the Nigerian National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, Josiah Emerole said “Ita was a professional sex worker at the hotel. She was picked up by the agency at Okon Brothel, Ajah, Lagos State, where she was exploiting the victim. When she was arraigned, she pleaded not guilty to the one count of trafficking in persons preferred against her by the agency.

Child trafficking is a major issue in Nigeria with security officials intensifying efforts to deal with the situation. Several arrests have been made over the past years.
