The Kenyan opposition leader, Raila Odinga on Tuesday declared himself “the people’s president” after taking an oath before thousands of his supporters.
The government has described his action as treasonable, but Mr Odinga went ahead to take the oath holding a green bible at an event held at the Uhuru park, in the Kenyan capital Nairobi.
Odinga and his coalition party boycotted last year’s re-run presidential poll claiming the electoral commission failed to provide an even playing field for a free and fair election.
A court challenge to the victory of President Uhuru Kenyatta failed to succeed after the Supreme Court ruled that Kenyatta’s victory was legitimate.
President Uhuru Kenyatta was sworn in for a second term in November last year after winning the repeat presidential election held in October.
In October last year Odinga said the re-run poll result was “fake” and said a “people’s assembly” would swear him in on December 12 which did not take place.
Police have in some areas stopped buses from carrying supporters to the event ground.
Some local media outlets have also been reported to have been shut down to prevent them from covering the event live.
