14 teachers in Zambia have been sacked by education officials for reportedly having sex with their pupils who are minors.
The state-owned Times of Zambia newspaper reported that these teachers are part of a larger group of 79 education workers in the southern province of the country who were sacked for other offenses including fraud and absenteeism.
41 of the education staff sacked according to the provincial education officer Florence Chikalekale joined the profession with fake qualifications.
Ms Chikalekale is quoted as saying “We are still waiting for other disciplinary cases.”
Meanwhile Zambia’s General Education Minister Dennis Wachinga, Dennis Wachinga is calling for reforms in the teaching profession.
“Teachers are public servants and are expected to support the Government of the day,” Dr Wachinga urged the leaders of the teachers to do.
In parts of Africa, some teachers are often found to be engaged in sexual relationships with their pupils with child rights activists on the continent calling for an end to such acts considered a sexual exploitation of school children.
