The President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa has made a shocking claim about the former first lady of the southern African country claiming she was mentally unstable during the latter part of her husband’s presidency.

Grace Mugabe and President Mnangagwa become rivals as a successor to former President Robert Mugabe gathered pace last year.

Then deputy president Emmerson Mnangagwa was sacked by his former boss forcing him to flee the country and resulting in a military takeover.

Mnangagwa told Britain’s Financial Times that a rally held by Grace Mugabe in November last year in which she called him a snake whose head must be crushed convinced him that the former first lady was not stable mentally.

“I was being castigated there as a snake. And to deal with this snake you must crush the head. And this snake is Mnangagwa, we must crush the head, not beat the tail or the body,” Mnangagwa said in the interview.

Mnangagwa who didn’t attend that rally was sacked a day after the event.

“She went berserk on that one. At that stage now I believed she was not mentally OK,” Mnangagwa added.

Shortly after Mnangagwa took over as president, Grace Mugabe was reported to have claimed that she was not been treated well under the new president.

President Mnangagwa has been visiting some African countries in the Southern African sub-region as he galvanizes support to turn the fortunes of his country around in a post Mugabe era.
