Local media in South Africa is reporting that the ruling African National Congress (ANC) is expected to force the country’s President Jacob Zuma out.
The broadcaster eNCA said ANC’s newly-elected National Executive Committee (NEC) had resolved to ask Zuma to resign.
But Reuters reported that an ANC spokeswoman has declined to comment on the report, as pressure mounts on Mr. Zuma to exit power.
News24 last week also reported that a decision to force Zuma to resign was taken during a meeting and that was unanimous.
The leadership of the ANC met on Saturday to outline the party’s program for the coming year. The NEC made no mention of Zuma’s possible early exit in a statement after the first two days of a four-day meeting.
“We can’t confirm rumours of things that we don’t know. The NEC has issued a statement on the totality of discussions yesterday,” a spokesperson told Reuters.
The deputy president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa succeeded his boss Jacob Zuma as ANC head last year and could replace him as the country’s next president.
Mr. Zuma whose presidency has been surrounded by a lot of controversy amid corruption allegations has in the past survived impeachment proceedings in the South African parliament.
