The story of a Nigerian Physician, Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye who joined a team of doctors from Texas to perform a special surgery on a baby in a woman’s womb has gone viral on social media.
The doctors at the Texas Children’s Fetal center successfully cut open a pregnant woman whose baby was just 23 weeks old, operated on the baby by taking out a tumor and placed the baby back into the womb.
The special medical procedure called Fetoscopic open neural tube defect repair saw the baby delivered successfully after 36 weeks naturally and was in good health.
According to the Texas Children’s Fetal center, the operation does not appear to have increased maternal-fetal complications. The process however allows for vaginal delivery thereby reducing long-term maternal risks.
The famous operation was carried out in 2016 according to the PEOPLE, quoting the mother of the baby, Margaret Boemer saying “I knew we were doing this to try and save her life. That’s all I could focus on.”
“It was a little bit of panic and nervousness,” the baby’s mother said then “but I knew it was what had to be done to give her life.”
Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye, and another colleague Dr. Darrell Cass of Texas Children’s Fetal Center led the surgery.

Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye whose story has gone viral is the Co-Director of the Texas Children’s Fetal Center and fetal surgery team member.
He is also a general pediatric surgeon who received his medical degree from Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Nigeria.
Dr. Olutoye has specialized clinical expertise in fetal and neonatal surgery, with specific interest in congenital diaphragmatic hernia and complex wounds.
