The President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa has said that state funds stolen by some public officials before his inauguration are being returned.
The Zimbabwean leader during his swearing in as President last year issued an amnesty for such funds to be returned by the end of next month.
Mnangagwa last year said should individuals who stole state funds return those monies, they would pardoned unconditionally.
“Upon expiry of the three-month window, the government will proceed to effect arrest of all those who would not have complied with this directive and will ensure that they are prosecuted in terms of the country’s laws,” Mnangagwa said last year.
The new Zimbabwean President has now said that progress is being made when he spoke to the media about calls for the return of such externalised funds “being heeded and substantial millions” have been returned.
Herald newspaper on Tuesday quoted Mnangagwa, who made the comments in Namibia during a state visit as he assured his government is addressing its challenges with “renewed effort and vigour”.
The government of Zimbabwe has also revealed that it will in the coming days set up special courts to deal with corruption cases.
This follows assurances from President Emmerson Mnangagwa to tackle corruption during his inauguration last year.
