A man arrested in Zimbabwe last month for insulting and undermining the country’s president, Emmerson Mnangagwa is to stand trial after he was declared mentally fit to do so.
Gustiv Kativhu was charged for calling Mnangagwa a “murderer” at a recently held Zanu PF congress, according to the New Zimbabwe.com.
Kitivhu, 45, was arrested at the congress to endorse Mnangagwa as party leader in December of last year.
The 45-year-old had been protesting outside the venue of the congress carrying anti-Mnangagwa placards with some reading “Mnangagwa killed my friend. Zanu-PF is giving jobs to China. Mnangagwa–Chiwenga diamond mafia. Chiwenga don’t beat vendors, give them jobs.”
Kativhu explained in court that he “wanted to tell him (Mnangagwa) that he killed my friend.”
The suspect was declared healthy by doctors after prosecutors asked for a mental evaluation due to his disorderly conduct during his initial remand.
Kativhu will now stand trial as the state says it has three witnesses against him who has been freed on bail and will return to court next month.
Emmerson Mnangagwa took over from his former ally Robert Mugabe who resigned after a military take over.
