45 Rwandans have been held and charged with terrorism in Uganda after their arrest at the border with Tanzania on December 11, according to police officials in Uganda.
They were charged on Friday according to a police spokesperson, Emilian Kayima who told the AFP that those arrested were charged “with carrying forged documents, false identities and the serious charge of terrorism as their intentions were pointing to that.”
The Rwandan nationals have been detained at a prison, east of Uganda’s capital Kampala.
Although the suspects claim they were travelling to Tanzania as evangelists before their arrests, the Rwandan government said they belong to a political party deemed a terrorist group.
The suspects according to Rwanda are members of the Rwanda National Congress, an opposition party in exile led by former allies of President Paul Kagame.
