A house belonging to the president of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Joseph Kabila has been burnt in an attack suspected to have been carried out by a militia group in the country.
The attack which took place on Monday was reported by the AFP to have been carried out in an attempt to steal goods from the building in Museienene, North Kivu province.
An army official told the AFP that the attack was carried out by a group called the Mai-Mai armed group.
“The residence of the head of state in Musienene has been targeted in an attack from 03:00 and then burned by the Mai-Mai,” the official told AFP.
The official said “The attackers ransacked everything before setting the house and some vehicles on fire.”
The Musienene residence is just one of many of Kabila’s houses scattered across DRC although he spends most of his time in the capital, Kinshasa.
“We saw the flames consume the residence of the president of the republic when we awoke,” said Pascal Mukondi, a resident of Musienene, quoted by the AFP.
Meanwhile nine soldiers have also been killed in two ambushes carried out by a suspected rebel militia group in South Kivu province.
A military official told the AFP that “The army recorded a loss of nine soldiers in two ambushes in the Baraka operational zone”.
The Mai-Mai militia has been accused of carrying out the attacks.
