The former president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe is to be treated well by his country’s new president despite his exit from power after a military takeover.
South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma has disclosed that his Zimbabwean counterpart, Emmerson Mnangagwa has given him assurances that Mugabe will be looked after as an “elder”.
The two leaders met last week for talks in Pretoria during Mnangagwa’s first official visit abroad as President of Zimbabwe.
Robert Mugabe has already been given immunity from prosecution and allowed to keep his properties and investments as part of the deal that led him to resign from power.
Zuma is quoted by NewsDay as saying that “I have been assured that the founding father of Zimbabwe, former president Mugabe, will be looked after. There will be no problems at all.”
“He (Mugabe) is our father. He grew up in the struggle and we have appreciated that this is what is important that in Africa, we should look after our elders,” Zuma added.
Mnangagwa’s spokesperson George Charamba told the state-run Herald that “President Mugabe remains not just safe but revered as the founding father and leader of Zanu-PF and that there is no intention to victimise him or degrade his reputation”.
