The government of Burkina Faso has announced that it has placed a ban on imports from North Korea as it part of its compliance with a UN economic sanction against the Asian country.
On Wednesday the Burkinabe government’s Foreign Minister Alpha Barry said “Following this inquiry, we conducted a thorough investigation at the commerce ministry and at the level of the finance department and found that there were economic operators importing from North Korea,” said
Barry also said that “Instructions have been given to the two ministries to end these importations”.
The ban will affect Burkina Faso citizens and foreign nationals living in the country, according to the government.
Pyongyang’s weapons programmes has attracted sanctions over the years and the latest decision comes after the United States in October revealed that Burkina Faso was still trading with North Korea despite the imposition of sanctions.
Imports from North Korea which are mostly petroleum products have amounted to $6.8 million in 2016, according to official figures.
