The much anticipated debate on the proposed bill seeking to remove the presidential age limit in Uganda has been halted by the speaker of the country’s parliament.
The suspension of the debate was ordered by the speaker after Monday’s session was disrupted by opposition lawmakers who are against the bill.
The opposition MPs made it difficult for the speaker to coordinate the debate as they raised several points of procedure.
Five of those MPs have been suspended for disrupting the house.
Monday’s parliamentary session was temporarily halted after doubts were raised over the validity of a committee report which is the basis of the debate.
The speaker suspended the sitting to review the complaints.
The current age limit is 75 and critics of President Yoweri Museveni say the attempt to remove the age limit is to ensure that Mr Museveni, 73 is able to stand for re-election in the 2021 elections.
