A new leader for South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) will be revealed this weekend when the party holds its national congress.

A successor to current president Jacob Zuma as party leader will be announced when ANC members vote to choose between current vice president, Cyril Ramaphosa and former cabinet minister, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

These two are the front runners for the position which could guarantee them the presidency should the ANC win the next election.

Party spokesman Zizi Kodwa told local media that “On Sunday morning as we arrive we should be able to make an announcement of the top six and take nomination of the rest of the leadership. We need to take out this item from the conference agenda as quickly as possible.”

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa a former trade union leader is considered the favourite since but Jacob Zuma’s preferred candidate, his ex-wife, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma is also considered a major threat.

South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has already predicted a Ramaphosa victory.

Last week Cyril Ramaphosa told local media that he believes his boss could be guilty of the rape although Jacob Zuma was acquitted of a rape allegation in 2006 before becoming president in 2009 but his vice president,.

Ramaphosa said the he “would believe” Jacob Zuma’s accuser in a reaction considered a sign both men are not close allies any longer.
