The president of Zimbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa is pushing for the removal of sanctions imposed on his country by western countries.

Zimbabwe has been reeling under foreign sanctions which have crippled the country’s economy under former leader, Robert Mugabe.

Since Mugabe’s exit from power, the new president has made efforts to restore broken relationships.

Mnangagwa told the leadership of the ruling Zanu-PF party, that current sanctions are crippling Zimbabwe’s national development and hopes the sanctions are lifted without any condition.

General elections are due next year but there are signals the government could bring the elections forward as it promises to ensure that the polls are credible, free and fair.

Former President Robert Mugabe clashed with western countries during his tenure since becoming a major political figure in his country after leading Zimbabwe to independence in 1980.

Mugabe was forced to resign last month after a military takeover and is reported to have felt relieved after agreeing to exit power in November. He was succeeded by a former ally Emmerson Mnangagwa.
