The Nigerian army chief leading the fight against the insurgency of Boko Haram has been sacked by the leadership of the country’s military command.
Major General Ibrahim Attahiru was sacked following series of attacks over the past months with the major attack taking place in the town of Mubi in Adamawa state.
In that attack at least 50 people were killed at a mosque.
The leadership of the Nigerian army has not however given an explanation for removing Major General Ibrahim Attahiru.
The Nigerian army spokesman is reported by the BBC to have said that the sacked commander will take up another role at Nigeria’s defence headquarters in Abuja.
The new general leading the charge to combat Boko Haram is Nicholas Rogers.
Nigeria’s army continues to struggle to bring the attacks undertaken by the militant group under control.
Special operations have been launched by the military to tackle the Boko Haram menace but to no avail yet.
Millions have been displaced by the activities of Boko Haram in Nigeria and neighboring countries where their operations have extended to.
