The President of Uganda Yoweri Museveni on Wednesday declared his backing for a longer presidential term from current five years to seven.
President Museveni has not proposal directly for the current term limit in his country to be extended but is reported to have defended why an extension is appropriate.
The long-term leader of Uganda has said that when African leaders have less number of time in office for a term, they are not able to execute projects for their citizens effectively.
Museveni said in a statement from his office that “For these countries with all these problems … five years is just a joke.”
Museveni was further quoted as saying that “Leaders in Africa have much more to do and need adequate time (between elections) to develop the continent.”
Lawmakers in Uganda are in a process of removing the presidential age limit in that country in a move seen to be an attempt to extend the reigns of President Museveni.
Reuters has quoted a rights activist and critic of Museveni, Andrew Karamagi to have said that the president’s comments “an insult to our intelligence.”
“If five years are so few … can he show us what he has done in 31 years,” Karamai said.
Museveni came into power in 1986 and has since won every election held in the east African country.
