The deputy president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa has reportedly received the nominations from the ruling African National Congress (ANC) to lead the party.

This is considered a major step towards securing majority votes this month when the party votes for a new leader to replace Jacob Zuma.

Voting data from nine provinces in South Africa showed that Ramaphosa received 1,862 nominations by ANC branches.

His main rival Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, however received 1,309 endorsements as these two battle for the leadership position of the ANC.

According to Reuters Ramaphosa who is a former trade union leader is seen as more market-friendly than Dlamini-Zuma whose last job was chairperson of the African Union Commission.

At the ANC congress this month, delegates are not bound to vote for the candidates nominated by their branches.

President Jacob Zuma will handover to a new ANC leader at the party’s conference which starts on December 16.
