Officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo have confirmed on Tuesday that four people were killed in an attack in the eastern part of the country.
Several others have also been taken hostage by suspected Hutu militia members.
The South Kivu province chief, William Sebrikanda is quoted by the AFP as saying that “A group of armed bandits attacked the village of Numbi,”
“Five people were also wounded and several others were carried off into the forest,” the chief told AFP.
DRC continue to be witnessing militia attacks liked to ethnic groups in a conflict between rival Hutu and Nande militias in the Kivu regions.
The Numbi village where the attack happened is close to a mining site known as Luziba. The exploitation of minerals there has been a major point of contention by locals groups.
AFP reported that a local mining official, Michel Liete, said he does not “think it is linked to the operations at the Luziba mine.”
