The President of Zimbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa has dissolved the cabinet of his predecessor, Robert Mugabe as he prepares to form a new team to help him govern the South African nation.
Mnangagwa was inaugurated last Friday as President after Robert Mugabe resigned from his position after a military takeover.
A statement from the new president’s chief secretary Misheck Sibanda said his boss “is in the process of putting together a new team of cabinet ministers”.
The new president according to Sibanda has however appointed Patrick Chinamasa as acting finance minister and Simbarashe Mumbengegwi as acting top diplomat “to allow uninterrupted services in critical ministries of government.”
Mnangagwa, 75, is expected to name a new cabinet this week but the exact day for the announcement has not been made known yet.
The former President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe is reported to be relieved after agreeing to exit power.
One of Mugabe’s best friends and ally, Father Fidelis Mukonori, on Sunday told Reuters that his friend was happy to have resigned after an eventful week of political transition in Zimbabwe.
Father Mukonori helped mediate and negotiate Mugabe’s resignation after being in the helm of affairs of Zimbabwe for 37 years.
“When he finished his signature his face just glowed, no weeping unless there were angels weeping somewhere,” Mukonori told Reuters.
Father Mukonori said “For me it was a sign that he was accepting that ‘ah this is done’, he is relieved, not that he is aggrieved but relieved.”
The Birthday of Robert Mugabe, February 21 has been declared a public holiday in Zimbabwe by the country’s government.
Local media the Herald Newspaper reported that the decision by the government to declare the former President’s birthday an annual public holiday was to honour his contribution to the nation.
