Emmerson Mnangagwa on Friday was sworn in as President of Zimbabwe succeeding Robert Mugabe who resigned from the position on Tuesday after a military takeover.
The former vice president was chosen by the Zanu PF party to become the next president after removing Robert Mugabe who led the country to independence 37 years ago.
Mnangagwa’s sacking by former president Robert Mugabe this month sparked a military intervention and the subsequent ousting of the 93 year old Pan Africanist.
The new president until recently was an ally of Mr. Mugabe but a power struggle between him and wife of his former boss, Grace Mugabe led to his sacking and his decision to subsequently flee the country.
The ruling Zanu PF party passed a resolution to make Mnangagwa its new president after removing Robert Mugabe.
Emmerson Mnangagwa 75 is nicknamed “The Crocodile” now has a major task of rolling out policies that would transform the Zimbabwe economy and bring prosperity to its people.
The former president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe refused to accept a proposal to go into exile away from his home country and has said he wants to die in Zimbabwe.
The 93 year old is reported to have also accepted a proposal to be granted immunity from prosecution, a major factor in his decision to resign as President.
Mnangagwa like his former boss Robert Mugabe also took part in the struggle against British colonial rule leading to the gaining of independence in 1980. He was trained in China and Egypt to become a guerrilla commander in the liberation war.
