Officials in Nigeria on Tuesday said that more than at least 50 people have died from a suicide bombing at a mosque in the north-eastern Nigerian town of Mubi in the state of Adamawa.
Reuters reported that police said the attack which took place on Tuesday bears the hallmarks of Islamist militant group Boko Haram.
The militant group is known for series of suicide attacks in crowded public places, such as mosques and markets as it continues with its insurgency in the West African nation.
A teenager is reported to have detonated the bomb in as people were arriving for morning prayers.
AP reported that the Police spokesperson Othman Abubakar said the young man detonated his explosives while walking among the worshipers.
An eyewitnesses told the News Agency of Nigeria that he “counted 27 dead and 49 injured people as they are being evacuated to the hospital”.
The Chairman of Mubi North, Alhaji Musa Bello told NAN “There are many casualties including the dead but I cannot give you the exact figure now as we are trying to ascertain the damage”.
Boko Haram although has been accused by officials to have undertaken the attack is yet to claim responsibility.
Nigeria’s army continues to struggle to bring the attacks undertaken by Boko Haram under control.
Special operations have been launched by the military to tackle the Boko Haram menace but to no avail yet.
Millions have been displaced by the activities of Boko Haram in Nigeria and neighboring countries where their operations have extended to.
