Thousands of Zimbabweans staged a major rally on Saturday to demand for the exit of the country’s longest leader, Robert Mugabe.
The Zimbabwe Defence Forces on Friday backed the rally called by the Zanu PF party and old veterans.
President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe has already lost the backing of his political party the Zanu PF after all ten provinces within the party voted to demand his exit.
The provinces on Friday held Provincial Coordination Committee meetings and resolved to call for the resignation of Mr. Mugabe.
The provinces have said that should Mr. Mugabe refuse to stepdown he would be recalled from Government for reasons of incapacitation and losing control of the party to his wife, Dr Grace Mugabe.
The provinces have also called for the reinstatement of the sacked former Vice President Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa claiming his expulsion was illegal.
Pressure is mounting on Mr. Mugabe to step down as leader of the country after meeting the military and negotiators from the Southern African development community (SADEC),
Talks were held on Thursday at Mugabe’s residence in Harare, the “Blue roof” to find a political solution to the ongoing crisis.
Further talks are still expected this weekend.
Robert Mugabe has been leader of Zimbabwe since 1980 after leading his country to gain independence from the British.
