Presidential election in the Democratic Republic of Congo is expected to take place on December 23, 2018 after several delays sparking violent clashes in parts of the country.

The country’s electoral commission on Sunday made date announcement for an election that is to get a replacement for President Joseph Kabila who refused to step down although his tenure has ended.

The Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) officials told a news conference in Kinshasa that when the election is held on December 23, 2018, results will be declared and published on January 9, 2019.

The winner of the presidential election would be sworn in on January 13.

43 million voters are reported to have been registered to take part in the election which was originally scheduled for late 2016.

Meanwhile the opposition in DRC is angry at the new date. “The predatory regime wants to prolong the instability and misery of the people. We do not accept this fantasy calendar,” the exiled opposition leader Moise Katumbi said in a tweet.

The delays in holding the election triggered violence cashes and unrests resulting in many deaths.
