The leading contender in Liberia’s presidential run-off election for next month, George Weah has received the support of an ex-warlord Prince Johnson.
The former warlord on Thursday announced his support for the former football star during a press conference in Monrovia.
He said “I am calling on my supporters to join me in supporting George Manneh Weah for the presidency.”
Mr. Johnson contested the previous election held this month and secured 8.2 percent of the total votes.
Johnson told journalists that “I have always said that Liberia needs change with new vision. The roads leading to our counties are deplorable. I believe that Liberia can find solution to this problem. I also think that Liberia needs security… food security, job security and health security.”
The leader of the Movement for Democracy and Reconciliation (MDR), is now backing Mr. Weah who won 38.4% of the votes ahead of Vice President Joseph Boakai, who had 28.8%.
The run-off is scheduled to take place on November 7 and the latest support for Mr. Weah could be significant in enabling him win the presidency.
Should November 7 run-off progress smoothly and a winner announced it would be historical in Liberia as President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who is Africa’s first female elected president would be handing over democratically to a new elected leader.
