The outspoken critic of Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame was on Monday denied bail and continues to remain in detention after she was charged with inciting insurrection against the state.
Diane Rwigara who attempted but failed to contest August’s presidential election won by Mr. Kagame is facing other charges for being critical of President Kagame since her arrest in September.
Rwigara’s mother Adeline was also denied bail in the capital Kigali. Her sister Diane was however released from custody after charges against her were lifted.
Rwigara had denied state charges of forgery and inciting insurrection leveled against her when she appeared in court two weeks ago.
State prosecutors claim Rwigara falsified registration papers she filed to run for president in August, although she was disqualified from contesting the poll won by President Kagame.
Rwigara told the court “I plead not guilty to all charges.” She also claimed to have been denied adequate access to her lawyer since her arrest on Aug. 30.
The 35-year-old accountant faces jail term if convicted of the charges leveled against her although she has described the charges as “politically motivated”.
