Uganda’s outspoken politician and former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate Kizza Besigye was arrested on Thursday and detained by the police.

Besigye was arrested together with other politicians from his party, according to the Daily Monitor.

A police spokesperson Denis Namuwoza told the media on Friday that Dr Besigye and those arrested are alleged to have ordered a mob that pelted police officers with stone in the town of Rukungiri.

The said mob attacked the police officers during a gathering by Besigye’s party supporters to listen to one of their leaders.

The police spokesperson, Namuwoza said Besigye “is wanted in Rukungiri on charges of attempted murder of policemen and holding unlawful assembly.”

Namuwoza told the Daily Monitor that Besigye and those arrested are being detained for further investigation.

One of opposition MPs, Mubarak Munyagwa who paid a visit to Besigye at his other colleagues said they had been denied bail.

“We offered to stand surety for them” but the police according to the MP “refused, saying the charges against them are serious and therefore, they will have to be arraigned in court and prosecuted.”
