Liberians will have to choose between former football star George Weah and Vice-President Joseph Boakai who becomes their next president after both candidates failed to secure over 50 percent of votes in last week’s presidential elections.
The two leading candidates will now have to battle it out in a run-off in November, according to the country’s election commission.
The commission said that with almost all votes counted so far, the former world footballer of the year, George Weah, is leading with 39%, while the current vice President Mr Boakai is in second place with 29%.
20 candidates participated in the election expected to pick a successor to Africa’s first democratically elected female President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
On Thursday there were reports on social media that Mr. Weah had won the election, but the NEC Chairman Jerome Korkoya rejected those claims saying “This commission has not declared any winner.”
Liberia is a country founded by slaves freed by the US in the 19th Century but has been torn apart by war.
This would be the first time the country would be witnessing the transfer of power democratically.
