Results so far from Liberia’s Presidential election have put former football star, George Weah ahead.
Figures from the Liberia’s National Elections Commission (NEC) put Mr. Weah ahead in 11 out of 15 counties, followed by his main rival, incumbent Vice-President, Joseph Boakai.
Local media reported on Thursday that most votes are yet to be counted though.
There would be a run-off between the two leading candidates if none of them wins by more than 50% of the votes.
On Thursday there were reports on social media that Mr. Weah had won the election, but the NEC Chairman Jerome Korkoya rejected those claims saying “This commission has not declared any winner.”
The delayed announcement of results was due to challenges at some polling stations in the West African nation.
Tuesday’s historic election will see a new president, elected democratically taking over from Africa’s first democratically elected female president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
