Liberians are expecting first set of official results from the October 10 presidential election on Thursday after an announcement was delayed on Wednesday.
The delayed announcement of results was due to challenges at some polling stations in the West African nation.
Tuesday’s historic election will see a new president, elected democratically taking over from Africa’s first democratically elected female president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
Liberia’s Vice President Joseph Boakai and popular footballer and Senator George Weah are considered the front runners.
The National Elections Commission (NEC) of Liberia is expected to announce results from the presidential and legislative elections on Thursday with turnout reported to be high.
Meanwhile one of Liberia’s leading political parties, Liberty Party has called for a halt in announcing the result of the presidential election. The party claims the elections were characterized by several irregularities.
In a statement the Liberty Party national chairman Benjamin Sanvee said “The Liberty Party is deeply troubled by the discovery of numerous incidents of irregularities and fraud that occurred during the elections,”
“We are calling on NEC to immediately halt further announcements of election results. If NEC does not cooperate with our request, we will take the appropriate legal action,” he added.
There would be a run-off between the top two contenders in Tuesday’s Presidential election should no candidate win 50% of the presidential vote.
