Authorities at Kenya’s University of Nairobi on Tuesday asked students to vacate the institute as they order the closure of the school indefinitely over security concerns.
The students of the university went on rampage on Monday protesting the invasion of the institution by police officers last week during a demonstration.
That assault by the police left 27 students with injuries, forcing the Senate of the university to order the closure of the school indefinitely.
The students demanded the removal or resignation of their Vice Chancellor Prof Peter Mbithi who they accuse of failing to prevent the police from invading the institution last week.
In a tweet the university said “UON senate has today closed the University with immediate effect due to the deteriorating security situation. Students have been asked to vacate the halls of residence with immediate effect but not later than 9.00am,”
The Director of Corporate Affairs for the university, John Orindi is quoted by Daily nation as saying that the decision had been arrived at due to security fears. “We will announce when the institution will re-open,” Orindi said.
There were indications the students of the University could stage more protests on Tuesday, with the closure of the university seen as an attempt to prevent further clashes with the police.
