South Africa’s Statistics institution (StatsSA) has released its latest victims of crime survey which revealed that sexual offences, including rape, increased by 117% over the past 12 months.
A total of 50 883 people reported being a victim of a sexual offence, of which 31 817 were women, according to the survey which captured 30 000 households across all nine provinces.
StatsSA released the report on Thursday Pretoria and disclosed that women who head their homes were more than twice as likely to experience murder, than households headed by men.
“This percentage of victimised households is more than twice the corresponding percentage in the case of male-headed households,” the survey stated.
The head of the Statistics South Africa Pali Lehohla is reported by News24to have said that 25 households reported that people in their households had been victims of murder in the last year.
But households headed by white South Africans according to the survey were happy with police response to crime situations unlike black-headed households.
Institute for Security Studies crime hub manager Lizette Lancaster told News24 that “We know that traditionally there are more police stations in the so-called suburbs and those police stations cater for smaller populations than police stations in so-called townships.”
